Our favourite Bangkok pubs

brit pubIf there is one thing Bangkok is not short of it’s pubs and taverns, especially around upper Sukhumvit, where every other bars seems to be either a tradition British pub or American sports bar. But there’s a reason why there are so many, they remain ever popular and just seem to work.

Often run by Western management, these venues specialize in giving expats and tourists a taste of the finer things from back home, those being extensive live sports coverage, ice cold draught and imported beers, and hearty pub grub.

Here are a few of our favourites:

soi 8 puc Soi 8 Pub

The Soi 8 Pub seems to be a real ‘local’ feeling place, attracting a lot of expats and regular Bangkok visitors, as well as in-the-know tourists. So what’s the attraction? As well as having a traditional  tavern look and vibe, the British management also make sure all the latest European sports coverage is show with TVs spread all around the bar. The bar also host regular live ‘farang’ bands and DJs, with entertainment aimed more at the 30+ market, as opposed to the more youthful beat taking place down Soi 11, and two free, well kept pool tables.

In addition to this there is a menu of classic pub grub, with homely dishes such as Fish & Chips, Roast Dinner, and a Full Pub Breakfast. Alcohol wise there are several beers on tap, including John Smith’s, Kronenbourg, Erdinger Weissbrau, and Bulmers Cider.

the pickled liver The Pickled Liver

The Pickled Liver is another great British styled pub with a local feel to it, tucked away down the end of Sukhumvit soi 7/1. What we really love about the Pickled Liver is the live sports coverage. The bar itself has lots of sports memorabilia, with the name of the bar a cheeky tribute to football legend George Best (who was known for his fondness of alcohol). Not only does the bar have multiple TVs showing a long list of Football, Rugby, Cricket, F1, Moto GP, and more, the cosy atmosphere of the bar makes it feel like you are watching the game in a living room with friends.

There is no shortage of liquid refreshments available, including Fosters, Magners, and O’Hara’s on tap, and a menu of classic British pub meals.

the londoner The Londoner Bangkok

The Londoner is another of our favourite Bangkok boozers, set on Sukhumvit Road, close to Soi 33. Now there are two things that we really like about the Londoner, the first of which is the beer. Not only are there an array of ales and bitters available, the Londoner is also a micro brewery, with their London Pilsner 33 and Londoner’s Pride Cream Bitter both brewed in the cellars down below.

The other thing that helps the Londoner stand out from the crowd is the entertainment. As well as hosting a number of yearly parties, especially for major sporting finals, the  bar also has  a stage hosting regular live bands and is the home of the Bangkok Comedy Collective, hosting their weekly open mic nights.

Australia bar The Australian Bar Bangkok

While we are being a bit bias towards Bangkok’s Brit bars there are plenty of Aussie, Irish and American styled taverns that we like, including the Australia Bar and BBQ. This distinctively Aussie boozer has an obvious obsession for Aussie rules, rugby, and cricket, with the waitress uniforms styled on the national rugby jersey.

As well as all major sports events from down under being screened here, you’ll also find lots of Australian beers too, including Pure Victoria Bitter and Coopers Pale Ale, and a menu which has lots of hearty pub food and barbeque plates.
