Watching the World Cup in Bangkok

  • Posted onMay 30th, 2014

England fansThe World Cup is just a month away, and not just any world cup, it’s a world cup in Brazil! The buzz is building, the bars are stocking the beers, and fans all across Bangkok washing their favourite match-day shirts, scouring the newsfeeds for injury updates, and praying that this will be their year..

But where are you going to watch the game? There is certainly no lack of choice when it comes to watching football in Bangkok, but this isn’t just any football, this is the world cup, and depending on the team you follow, picking the perfect venue to watch the game could be tricky.

The Pickled Liver BangkokEnglish Fans – Pickled Liver

English football fans will have no shortage of places to watch the game, with a large football loving UK expat community in Bangkok and several Bars which will cover their games, from Sukhumvit soi 11’s Manchester United Bar to the Londoner by Sukhumvit 33.

However, for that traditional, old school style English pub vibe and atmosphere, there is no better place in Bangkok to watch the football than the Pickled Liver. Nestled towards the end of Sukhumvit soi 7/1, this cosy George Best themed bar also offers some decent pub grub, and several well positioned TVs to make sure you don’t miss a moment of the action.

Old German BeerhouseGermans Fans – Old German Beerhouse

For German fans there’s one obvious place to go, the Old German Beerhouse, situated on Sukhumvit soi 11. As well as a huge screen which they pull out for major sporting events, you’ll also be treated to a menu of German beers and hearty, stomach lining, Bavarian cuisine.

This bar is sure to pull in a large crowd of German expats for the big games. I was lucky enough to watch last year’s Champions League final here, which was between two German teams (Bayern and Borussia), and the atmosphere was simply fantastic, packed with football loving fans.

Australian Fans – Tenderloins Soi 33

There are a number of Australian bars in Bangkok, and though football isn’t normally their sport of choice they’ll all be tuning for this year’s world cup, cheering on the socceroos!

My choice for Australian fans would be Tenderloins, a somewhat upmarket Australian sports bar on Sukhumvit 33, not far from Phrom Phong BTS. As well as enjoying the live football on seven large screen devoted to sports action, you can also feast in style, with prime imported steaks and a long wine list to explore (you’ve got to have something to enjoy while watching the Aussies play!).

Sports Corner BangkokAmerican Fans – The Sports Corner Bangkok

There are also a number of American sports bars in Bangkok, most of which have lots of large screen TVs dedicated to showing sports action. However, only The Sports Corner can brag of being the bar with the most TV’s per square meter in Bangkok. Among the 10 screens you’ll find a large 42” TV, a whopping 50” screen, and gob-smacking 100” HD projected TV, making sure you not only watch the  game, but feel like you are there on the pitch.

The Sports Corner is located at the start of Sukhumvit soi 20, and as well as lots of indoor space to watch the game there’s also a cool patio for those who just can’t bear to see those penalty shootouts.

The OfficeNeutral Fans – The Office Bangkok

For the neutral I’d suggest The Office on Sukhumvit soi 33. Despite being and Aussie owned bar it definitely has an international vibe to it, attracting a mix of holiday makers and expats from both Asia and the West. The bar also pulls in a decent Thai crowd, with lots of local Thai office workers stopping here to get a bar snack and sports fix.

With loads of easy to see screens spread around the room, free wifi, pool tables, and a large menu of BBQ and hearty bar food, it’s hard not to enjoy an evening here.. Unless you’re team have just been knocked out of the World Cup finals, or course..
